Havre Loses Season Opener at Home to Whitefish
HAVRE, Mont (NMB) - The Havre Blue Ponies kicked off their 2014 season at home, hosting the Whitefish Bulldogs at Blue Ponie Stadium and hoping to bring the BNSF Traveling Trophy back to Havre High School. Whitefish had a number of returning players, and used their running game to press the Blue Ponie defense to stop the Bulldog ground game. Havre's Dane Warp played a game of pitch, run and pass behind a young offensive line that has only one returning player.

Both teams went scoreless on their opening possessions. Whitefish put the first points on the scoreboard at 4:25 of the first quarter on a 25 yard pass from Luke May to receiver Jed Nagler.

Havre QB Dane Warp lead the Blue Ponies right back down the field, hitting receiver Nate Rismon and and Parker Fillius for big gains to put Havre inside the 20, and a Whitefish facemask penalty put the ball on the Bulldogs 9 yard line. Whitefish put on heavy red zone pressure, but Warp rolled right on 2nd and goal, hitting Cody Pribyl with a 6 yard pass. After the extra point, With the game tied 7-7 with :35 seconds left in the 1st.

QB May used a long pass to Nagler with 7:41 left to take a 14-7 Bulldog lead, which Whitefish would take into the locker room at halftime. Then Havre's QB Dane Warp comes out of the locker room and hit Nate Rismon for a 36 yard TD pass at the 11:00 minute mark to add 6 point, and with the P.A.T., The Blue Ponies tie it up 14-14 early in the 2nd half.

Both teams saw their defenses make big plays to hold the offense, then May hit Negler for a 50 yard pass to make it 1st and goal on Havre's 3 yard line, then a short screen pass to WR Brian Fauntleroy, and with the extra point The Bulldogs pull out front 21-14 with 4:49 left in the 3rd quarter. The Bulldog defense got tougher, sacking Warp for a loss and shaking him up, sending him to the side line, with backup QB Parker Fillius finishing the series. Then on the next series, Havres' Gunner Aaguson sacked QB May to force Whitefish to punt.

Warp returned to finish the 3rd, and early in the 4th hits Issac Warp for a 15 yard completion, then hits Kato for another 10 yard pass. But a tough Bulldog defense held up and forced Havre to punt.

Then a pass interference in the end zone on the Blue Ponies put the ball on Havre's 14 yard line put Whitefish in good field position, then a 12 yard run put the ball 1st and goal one the 1 yard. May scored on a QB sneak, but the PAT was blocked and hit the bottom of the crossbar, making it 27-14 with 5:17 left in regulation.

Penalties and a tough Bulldog defense forced Havre to punt with 3:03 left. The Bulldogs returned to the ground game and held on to the ball and the lead to take the BNSF Trophy back to Whitefish for a 3rd straight year.

The Blue Ponies next game is Friday Night as they travel to Mile City to take on the Custer County Cowboys. You can hear the game beginning with the pregame at 5:45pm and kickoff at 6pm on 610 AM KOJM and online at

Orediggers Dim Lights in Season Opener
HAVRE, MT (NMB)-The Montana State University Northern football team struck first, but their season opener was spoiled by 28 second half points from the Montana Tech Orediggers and the Lights fell 38-24 in Butte.

Sophomore running back Zach McKinley capped a game opening 78 yard drive with a 12 yard touchdown scamper to give the Lights an early lead. Montana Tech would respond with a field goal on their next possession and take the lead with 12:47 left in the first half when sophomore quarterback Andrew Loudenback connected with Alec Bray for a touchdown on a 3rd and 14 play.

The Lights would counter moments later with a 70 yard touchdown strike from Lights quarterback Travis Dean to Jake Messerly to regain the lead only 47 seconds after the Oredigger score. Penalties would negate touchdowns for either team before the half closed and Northern went into the locker room with a 17-10 advantage.

After the intermission the Orediggers offense was unstoppable, scoring on their first three possessions of the half and gaining a 31-24 lead by the end of the third quarter. Loundenback threw for his second and third touchdowns of the game and Nolan Saraceni ran for a 49 yard score in the 21 point third quarter for Montana Tech.

Saraceni would go on to rush for over 100 yards in the second half alone and Loundeback added an insurance touchdown on a 6 yard run in the fourth. Tech held the Northern offense scoreless in the fourth quarter and secured the 38-24 victory.

The Lights are back in action Saturday September 6th when they host Dickinson College at 1:00pm.
